Note from the author:  This is the long awaited expansion of Audra Hart’s short romantic tale of Silas Darkheart and Valentina Moretti.  It was originally published as a short story in the Claiming My Valentine anthology, however this version has been extensively revised and expanded.  Enjoy!

​The beast and man alike chuff their approval as Tina swings the shotgun like a baseball bat to land a crippling blow with the stock of the weapon against the demi-god’s head.  Unfortunately, Geno just shakes off the hit and keeps on coming.  When he reaches out to seize Tina’s throat, she forcefully brings up her knee between her attacker’s legs to land a painful blow no male ever enjoys.  

Before Kyllengeno can retaliate, Darkheart’s powerful feline jaws snap over the back of the demi-god’s neck.  A sickening sound of bones crushing, flesh tearing, and gore splattering fills the air as the massive catamount gives his helpless prey a vigorous shake.  Once the beast is content his quarry has been incapacitated, he drops the bloodied lump of flesh without a backward glance.  Turning to find his mate, Darkheart inwardly cringes because she’s looking pale and sickly.  

Not that Silas can really blame her.  Two of the few times they were actually together outside of their dreams she watched his catamount attack and kill to protect her.  While it demonstrates that he will do anything to keep her safe, it is really not the kind of behavior that speaks to a woman’s heart, like oh say, candy and flowers would do.  

“We don’t do candy and flowers!” the beast chuffs his outrage at the very idea.  “We claim.  We cherish.  We protect.”  Silas certainly can’t disagree with his beast’s assertion.  Both cat and man alike would do anything to show Valentina that she is theirs, she is treasured and will be safe in their care… always.  

“Oh goodness, I’ll never get used to that.”  Tina shudders involuntarily, and Silas fears she’s about to reject him, man and beast.  She looks into his feline eyes and asks; “Silas, is your job always so violent?”

The ancient magick takes hold and Darkheart resumes his human form.  He can’t help his inane male pride when he sees his female blush at the sight of his nudity.  Perhaps she is recalling their time in the meadow?  He is enthralled as he watches his beloved shyly lick her lips at the obvious evidence of his need for her.  The adrenaline produced during a fight in his cat’s form, often leaves the human with a hard on after a shift.  But this reaction is for Tina and has nothing to do with adrenaline… just the tantalizing pheromones of his mate.  He can’t help but smirk because Tina doesn’t really seem to be even remotely offended by the view.

A hard slap on his back brings Darkheart back from his naughty thoughts.  “Pounce on your mate later, my friend.”  Tara’s laughing chastisement instantly cools his ardor, and his heart plummets when Tina’s lovely cheeks are infused with a deep pink tone that reveals her embarrassment. 

Darkheart looks over his shoulder at the fallen form of his now most hated enemy.  Sadly, this bit of dirty business isn’t quite finished.  Tina watches negative emotions play across Silas’ face as he glares at the fallen form of the rogue demigod. “Is Geno really dead?”

“Sorry, Wildcat, but no.  I broke his neck, but he will eventually come around.  Only way to truly kill a god or demi-god is to take off their head.  My beast and I wanted to do just that, but against my better judgement, I restrained Big Brother.”  

Silas reaches out to take her hand into his, because he just needs to touch her.  Needs to assure himself that she’s really safe and her participation in this rescue mission didn’t cause any harm to befall her.  Once his inner beast is again calm he explains further.  “I’ll need to transport him to the UCI before he heals and begins making a nuisance of himself again.”  He snorts, “Stinkin’ demigods tend to be really tough to kill, but it will be kind of funny to watch him waking up inside a magickally reinforced holding cell at the UCI.”

Darkheart leans down with the intention of kissing his female one more time before seeing to his duties when Tara shouts out a warning.
