Be Mine: A Valentine's Novella

Blurb:

Picture
Jackson Darragh has the best Valentine's Day planned--dinner and romantic gesture included. All those plans blow up when his boyfriend suddenly breaks up with him. Broken and dejected, he goes to his neighborhood gay club to drown his sorrows in alcohol.

David Young didn't know what possessed him when he leaves his Mormon family abruptly for a life of total authenticity in the big city. Alone, his first taste of independence lands him at a gay club with no prospects, no roof over his head, only a future filled with uncertainty. All he has is the desire to live a life that is wholly his own.

A strange twist of fate and one conversation overhead through club music later, and David finds himself living with the kindhearted Jackson.

Now, one year later, Jackson is still hurting from his sudden break-up. David, who can't fight off his attraction for his friend any longer, is determined to make better Valentine's memories for Jackson. The more time that passes, the more Jackson wants to see the light come back in the brooding artist's eyes. He knows he has only to say those two magic words, and their lives change forever.

"Be mine."

Excerpt:

“Hey.”

David turned to look at a figure sitting nearby. He hadn’t seen the man from behind Sare, but he realized there was actually a man sitting there, with a good couple of shot glasses scattered around in front of him.

The strange, tipsy, borderline drunk man looked rather handsome. He was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with one of the buttons unbuttoned, and his hair was mussed, though David could see that he’d put some hair product of some kind in his dark, wavy, cocoa brown-colored hair.

He had the aquiline features of one of those angel statues David had seen. So handsome, if the drunk hadn’t looked like he was in repose. David’s cock even had a little twitch of a response, though he felt a little ashamed of that.

David’s first thoughts shouldn’t have been that he wanted to fuck a stranger in a bar, no matter that it was a status quo.

Overall, the stranger looked a little disheveled and stressed, but there weren’t any alarm bells ringing in David’s mind at first glance of him. In fact, if it weren’t for the grimace on the guy’s face, David might have been a stammering mess in the stranger’s proximity. He was never very good at talking to attractive people.

If the man beside him hadn’t looked like he’d been drinking to forget something painful, David would have tried to screw his courage to the sticking place—Shakespeare pun intended—and maybe he’d have tried to ask the stranger out on a date. He was already out, why not try to be courageous, right? Forget the fact that he didn’t have a home, or work!

Self-preservation told him not to do that, though. Years of having to hide his sexuality and his entire identity tended to do that.

“Hello,” David replied, and politely he added, “May I help you?”

“What you said back there, about leaving home,” the stranger asked. “Was any of that true?”

David blinked.

“Yes, that was all true,” he replied. “I figure I might stay at a motel for a couple of nights while I try to figure my situation out.”

“Do you want a place to live? I have an extra unit available in my building. I bought the entire place recently, so it’s barebones as shit, but we can work something out if you’re interested,” the man said, taking a swig of another shot of hard liquor.

“Is there a catch?” David asked, his voice clearly a little incredulous. He knew not to expect handouts or too much charity in the big city, but…was there something about his face that made people want to go out of their way to help him? Maybe it was just something about being gay? Or was this one of those serendipitous moments in time where things were just aligning incredibly perfectly?

“No catch, except for the fact that I only have an old mattress and some older stuff I’d much rather give to a guy who knows what he wants out of life, and I need a tenant anyway. There’s a lot of space I don’t need in my building,” the man replied. “I’m Jackson, by the way. Call me Jack.”

“I’m David Young. It’s nice to meet you.”

Jack grinned. “Boy, you’re real polite, aren’t you? It’s nice to meet you, David Young.”

David felt some heat in his cheeks at that statement. “It’s just how I was raised.”

Excerpt:

Picture
Liam had helped him lie down on his back and Xavier spread his legs in invitation. Liam moved over him and settled between his thighs, and they both moaned from the contact of their cocks pressing together for the first time. Liam kissed him, then made his way down his throat, shoulders, chest, and stomach. As Liam licked and kissed him everywhere, he had slicked up his fingers and pressed one against Xavier’s waiting hole. At first, he stiffened up. It had been a very long time since he had bottomed and he was a little nervous. But when Liam began to play with his nipples, Xavier relaxed, allowing the digit to slide in.

Liam kept up his attentions on Xavier’s body as he stretched his hole, adding one finger at a time until he had four fingers rocking in and out of his body smoothly. Xavier thrashed and writhed as he groaned his pleasure, trying so hard not to come too soon or make too much noise. He had no idea how long they had, and he didn’t want to be interrupted from his cries of pleasure. The thought of Agatha coming back and finding them, placing the curse on him once again, and robbing him of this moment with his mate made his heart heavy and filled him with dread. He was finally able to be with Liam and enjoy their time together, but their time was limited.

“Now, mate. I’m ready,” Xavier whispered.

Liam sat up and grabbed the packet of lube, then pulled his fingers free from Xavier’s body. Instantly he missed the connection and needed it back like a man in the desert needed water. Xavier looked down his body and watched as Liam squeezed out the last little amount of lube onto his fingers, then coated his gorgeous cock, making it glisten. Xavier licked his lips, looking at the angry, purple, leaking head. All he wanted to do was taste his mate, but he knew it couldn’t happen right now. He loved sucking cock, and Liam’s extra-large one to go along with his extra-large body was stunning. It had to be at least eleven to twelve inches long, and it was thick, but not overly thick. He knew this first time it would still make him feel as if he were being split in two, but he couldn’t wait to feel Liam inside him. To finally feel that connection that only comes from sharing your body with another. And he knew this time would be a thousand times more intense because it would be his mate, not some one night off.

Liam moved closer as he held the base of his cock and pressed the tip to Xavier’s waiting hole. He bent his legs and pulled them back as far as he could without the use of his hands, giving Liam more room.

Liam pressed forward and Xavier’s back arched as he bit his bottom lip, tasting the copper of his blood. The burn was a little painful, but he liked it. Liam slowly rocked in an inch, then pulled back. By the time he did this a few times, each time going in a little deeper, the pain began to wane, and his body relaxed and filled with pleasure. Liam leaned forward, pressing their sweaty chests together, and Xavier put an arm over his shoulders, careful of his injured hand and pulled him closer. Liam kissed him deep, driving his tongue to the back of Xavier’s throat as his cock filled Xavier completely.

They moved together as one, meeting thrust for thrust as their tongues entwined, and their breath mingled. Xavier had never felt so full in his life, or so good, and he never wanted this moment to end. The only thing better would be if he could use his hands and explore his mate’s body as they rocked together in their bliss.

Liam pulled back as he swiveled his hips, the action causing his cock to brush against Xavier’s sweet spot, and Xavier couldn’t help the cry that came from his throat as his body arched upward. “Right there, babe?” Liam asked breathlessly, his hot pants caressing against Xavier’s cheek.

“Yes. Gods, yes. Don’t stop, Liam. Make me come, mate,” Xavier hissed low, still trying to be as quiet as he could, but damn if that was an easy thing to do right now. Liam was filling him, and making his body sing. All he wanted to do was cry to the heavens, sharing with everyone how much pleasure his mate was giving him.

Liam hit that spot again, and Xavier could feel his orgasm racing to completion. He tightened his hold around Liam’s shoulders and pressed his face against his sweaty throat as he rocked with Liam, taking everything his man had to give him. The sensation of Liam’s rippled abs rubbing against the underside of his cock was just the right amount of friction, and Xavier’s head began to spin. Liam had to be close too because he picked up the pace and began pummeling Xavier’s body like a desperate man. The sounds of skin slapping skin, heavy breathing, and hushed moans filled his ears, and Xavier’s balls pulled up tight against his body. “Now, mate. I’m coming,” he said through clenched teeth.

Story Excerpt:

Picture
Vaughn felt the wave of evil wash over him, a wave strong enough to wake him from his sleep. He shuddered as the residue from the wave coated him. He pushed aside the cloying feeling and focused instead on the source.

He stretched out his mind, seeking the origin, and failing to find where it had started. All he found was a trail that reached farther into the distance than his mind could reach. He’d need to fly if he was going to track the wave to its source—and fly now, before it faded.

“Did you feel that?” Vaughn asked his brothers. He used his telepathy to send the question to his brothers, but knew someone from their host would soon be in contact using the same method.

“It shook the ground below our feet,” Sullivan answered.

Vaughn easily sensed the anxiety and frustration coming from his brother and imagined he was already pacing, like a caged lion, in the darkness of his daylight refuge.

“It was stronger than anything I’ve felt in decades,” Vaughn said. “Do you think it was a breach?”

“Shit,” Knox cursed. “I hope it’s not a full breach. If there’s a demon above ground he could create enough chaos to have us overwhelmed by rampaging blood suckers by nightfall.” Knox swore again and Vaughn imagined both his brothers were now prowling their underground lair.

“I can’t wait for you,” Vaughn said. “I need to move now.” He pulled on his black leathers—saving the power he would have expended by teleporting his garments onto his body—for what may yet prove to be an extended hunt.

“Don’t go alone,” Sullivan said with a sigh. “We’ll follow as soon as darkness falls.”

“Vaughn.” His name was a summons from their leader.

“Mikhail has sent for me. I’ll contact you when I can.”

Vaughn closed his eyes and focused on their host’s leader. He arrived at Mikhail’s side before he’d taken his next breath. An instant later Grigori, Parker, and Dominic were gathered around them at the lookout above their village. Mikhail had called on each of the guardians who were still able to walk in the light.

Most of their angel brethren had suffered injuries throughout their years on Earth that had both enhanced and limited their innate angelic powers. It was hard to come away unscathed from so many thousands of battles.

None stood now as they had when they’d first descended. Those who hadn’t died from their injuries were now more powerful and more deadly than they had been at their creation. That added power came at a price, however, and that price was different for each of them.

For Sullivan and Knox, the price was to never again walk in the sunlight. For Vaughn, it meant being caged for two nights each lunar cycle. He knew his penance was not as great as some, but the nights he was caged were still horrific. He lost himself to the madness of the beast within. His constant fear was that one day he’d actually escape his cage and kill all those he loved in a mindless, bloody rampage.

He shuddered at the thought and focused now on Mikhail. Mikhail was staring at him intently. Their leader knew all their secrets, all their fears. That was Mikhail’s curse.

“I won’t ever let that happen, Vaughn.”

Vaughn nodded once, clear in the understanding that Mikhail would end his life before he allowed the wolf within him to harm one of their own.

“We leave immediately,” Mikhail said. “The trail is weakening with each passing second and I fear we have a long way to go before we find the origin of this attempted breach.”

“Are you sure they didn’t actually succeed this time?” Parker asked. “It sure as hell felt like one of the fuckers broke loose.”

Mikhail turned to Dominic and raised an eyebrow. “You’re the one with the demon radar. Is one of them above ground again?”

Dominic’s jaw tensed as he shook his head. The light shone on the fine silver scars that ran down his face and neck. Vaughn had been the one to carry Dominic home after he’d been attacked by a demon who’d made it to earth. He knew the scars continued down the length of Dominic’s back. He’d nearly died that day.

“We’ll follow you,” Mikhail said as Dominic stretched out his ebony wings and took flight.

Dominic’s close call with death had left him with a keen awareness of demons. They could all sense the residue of a demon’s taint, but Dominic was aware of them on a visceral level. Dominic might hate that shared connection, but he still used it to their advantage. He was a guardian, as was Vaughn. The job of protecting the Earth fell to them and they would all continue to fight until their souls ascended to heaven.

Vaughn spread his wings and joined his battalion as they followed the wave of evil to its point of origin.

Author Bio:

I live in Australia, in an area surrounded by the bush. I wake early and walk for an hour. It gives me time to think about the characters I am writing about and their interactions. I have on occasion been interrupted in my walks by a kangaroo—sounds like a joke, but they are abundant in the bush around my home.

I have been an avid reader since I was twelve years old. My first series of books were Nancy Drew, and they have left me with an enduring love for mystery and suspense novels. I do love romance, though, so I write what I would love to read, which will always have strong heroes and a happily ever after. What girl doesn't want that? My love of fantasy has let me explore the paranormal genre, and I love the way it lets me escape reality for a little while.

My hope is that people will enjoy reading my books as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

I have three series out currently. Eminence Shifters, the spin off and companion series Pine Falls, and a new series– The Heavenly host.

The Eminence Shifters series features predominately cougar shifters, while Pine Falls has a menagerie of paranormals including cougar, coyote, bear and wolf shifters, vampires, demons,  and even an angel. The Heavenly Host is about a Host of Angels that have been earthbound for over six thousand years and the battle they wage to fight the evils of hell and claim their reward– a mate to love for eternity.

Story excerpt:

“I’m married to a werewolf,” Cole Morgan said to his reflection with a slightly giddy laugh. The champagne had made him feel nice and relaxed. He took his black-framed glasses off his face and cleaned the lenses with a tissue.

Once his glasses were back on, he looked at his reflection in the bathroom mirror and frowned. His black suit had a little bit of frosting on the lapel from where Evan had insisted on feeding him a slice of wedding cake. For once, Cole couldn’t be blamed for being a mess. This was all Evan’s fault.

He grabbed some more tissues and wet them before rubbing at the white, creamy glob.

Well, he thought to himself. At least I looked good for the wedding.

He smiled as he thought about the cake he had just cut with his new husband. It had been a pretty simple wedding cake, but the two little grooms on top was something Cole was going to keep forever. He might even display them somewhere in the apartment.

Deciding that his suit was as good as it was going to be, and focusing on the fact that he wouldn’t be wearing it for much longer, Cole left the bathroom and went back out to the private dining room of the hotel they were staying in.

It was typical of Evan to make sure they had a dining room to themselves, even though it was just the three of them. Neither of them had wanted a big wedding. Okay, it was mostly Cole who didn’t want one, but Evan had been happy to go along with it.

The only person he had truly wanted with him was Joey, his little brother. Well, in an ideal world he would have invited his best friend, Naomi, as well, but she was married to Evan’s cousin, Jared, and if they invited him and not the rest of the West family, there would be hell to pay. Not that there wouldn’t be already.

“Joey’s going to eat this entire cake if you don’t stop him,” Evan said as Cole walked back into the small dining room to join them.

Joey, although nearly sixteen, had frosting on his cheeks like a little boy who couldn’t control himself when faced with dessert. Cole couldn’t resist grabbing his phone and taking a photo of his brother to be used as blackmail material at a later date. Joey just grinned at him with a mouthful of cake, not embarrassed one bit.

“Hey, there’s only three of us, and it’s a whole cake. Do you want it to go to waste?” Joey said. “That’s environmentally irresponsible.”

He had a point. It might have seemed strange to most people, that his wedding had only consisted of the three of them, but to Cole it was perfect. Evan’s grandpa had asked Evan to go to London to look at a hotel he was thinking of buying. It had seemed like a good opportunity to elope. No one had known what they were going to do while over there, except for Joey. Somehow the kid had managed to keep a secret for weeks.

After looking at venues and not finding anywhere that felt right to them, Cole, while planning some sightseeing for them, finally found out that people could get married on The London Eye. It had basically been like getting married on a fancy Ferris wheel. They had bought the wedding package, which gave them their own pod. It had been decorated with cream rose garlands and fairy lights, and had champagne and hors d’oeuvres waiting for them. The best part, though, was that they had booked it for sunset. Getting married while looking out over London as the late evening sun lit it all up in a pinkish glow was breathtaking.

Evan leaned back in his chair, his white shirt stretched over his firm chest beneath his suit jacket. He put his arm along the back of Cole’s chair and reached in to kiss the side of his head.

“Sorry about your jacket.”

“No, you’re not,” Cole said.

“No, I’m not,” Evan replied with a grin.

“Anyway,” Joey said, coughing into his fist as he stood. “Seeing as I’m kind of the best man...to both of you, I’d like to say a couple of things.”

Cole sat back against Evan’s arm and grabbed his glass of champagne. He hadn’t expected Joey to say anything, but he was curious as to where this would go.

Joey had a champagne flute filled with orange juice that he held up. He reached into the pocket of his pants and pulled out a folded up piece of paper.

“Okay, so first, I want to thank you guys for bringing me with you to London. This trip has been amazing. Also, I want you both to know how much it means to me that out of all the people in your lives, I’m the one person you didn’t want to get married without.”

Cole had half been expecting to be on the receiving end of a roast, so hearing his brother being so sincere actually made Cole feel quite emotional.

“Cole, you and I haven’t always been close,” Joey continued. “It took an awful thing to make us remember that we’re family and that we’ll always be there for each other, no matter what. Today, I feel really lucky because I never really expected to have a relationship with my brother, and now I get to have two.”

Adult Excerpt:

“You don’t know what you do to me,” Evan whispered against the side of his face. He mouthed at the lobe of one of Cole’s ears before biting down gently.

“I’m pretty sure I do,” Cole said. Since the beginning it had been like Evan was obsessed with him, unable to get enough of him. Being a slim, kind of geeky human he still didn’t understand why a sexy, strong werewolf like Evan would want him but he certainly wasn’t going to complain.

Evan just huffed against Cole’s hair. “No, you don’t. You couldn’t. Every single one of my senses is completely wrapped up in you.”

Cole reached up and ran his hand down the side of Evan’s face. He pushed his ass back against Evan’s crotch and felt the evidence of his husband’s words.

“I’m kind of annoyed we weren’t alone in that pod today,” Cole murmured as he ground his ass back in a circular motion. “That would have been hot.”

One of Evan’s hands snaked around to cup Cole’s cock through his pants. “Maybe we can come back for our anniversary.”

Cole groaned at the contact and reached down to unzip his fly. He leaned back even further, letting Evan’s firm body take his weight. His pants began to slide down a little and Evan quickly pushed his hand inside to cup Cole through his boxer shorts.

It was such a cliché, but Evan really did play his body like an instrument. He knew all Cole’s weak spots, the secret places designed to drive him crazy. The werewolf bit down lightly on his earlobe again, and Cole gave a full body shudder.

Deciding to move this along a bit, Cole undid the rest of the buttons on his shirt. He wanted more. He needed more.

“Evan,” he groaned low in his throat.

Evan stopped massaging Cole’s cock through his shorts and moved his hands up to the human’s chest.

“What do you need?” Evan asked him, his mouth still close to Cole’s ear.

“I need you to fuck me.”

Evan growled low and quiet in his throat. He stepped back just enough to turn Cole around so that they were facing each other. Evan’s mouth was on his in an instant. His arms were around him, holding him close. Evan kissed like he fucked. He completely dominated.

By the time the kiss was broken, Cole was feeling a little dizzy. He just knew that if he looked in a mirror, he would see how debauched he looked, all kiss-swollen lips and dilated pupils.

He stroked his hand down Evan’s face, brushing the werewolf’s cheekbone with his thumb. He knew how lucky he was. He was going to get to spend the rest of his life with this amazing man.

“I love you,” he said.

Evan gave him a soft smile and leaned in to place a kiss on Cole’s exposed collarbone. “I love you, too.”

It didn’t seem fair that Evan was still completely dressed. Cole started with Evan’s tie. His fingers were perhaps a little clumsier than Evan’s as he untied the knot and pulled it through his shirt collar. He worked on the buttons of Evan’s shirt next, exposing more and more of his caramel-skinned chest with each one he undid.

When the shirt was finally open, Evan shrugged it off and let it fall to the floor. Cole let his gaze travel over the slope of Evan’s shoulders and felt his mouth water. He took several steps back and pushed down his own boxer shorts, feeling a warm flush when Evan’s own gaze was instantly drawn to Cole’s erection. With his pants still on, Evan took two steps forward before he dropped to his knees right in front of Cole. Cole took in a sharp breath as his husband put his hands on his hips and nuzzled at the thin trail of hair on Cole’s lower stomach. Evan inhaled deeply before licking a stripe up it and dipping into his bellybutton.

Cole bit his lip and rested one of his hands on Evan’s shoulder while he stroked through his thick dark hair with the other. He closed his eyes when he felt the touch of Evan’s fingertips trail down to his balls, the light touch a maddening tease. It wasn’t long before Evan took Cole’s cock in his mouth and gently sucked at the head.

“Fuck,” Cole said, his voice coming out as a breathy sigh. Cole forced his eyes open, wanting to see the erotic sight that was Evan with his lips around Cole’s cock. The werewolf was looking up at him, his eyes heavy lidded. He sucked with a light pressure at first before swallowing Cole down as far as he could go.

Cole hissed and strangled a whimper. Evan’s mouth was hot and wet and just about perfect. Evan nudged Cole’s legs apart so he could reach behind him and grab a handful of Cole’s ass. He squeezed the tender flesh and dragged his blunt fingernails over the cheeks.

“Evan,” Cole moaned. “You need to stop. I don’t want to come like this.”

Evan held his gaze, his long lashes framing his eyes, as he slowly slid off Cole’s cock.

“And how do you want to come?” he asked, his tone low and seductive.

Cole licked his lips and looked down at the dark flush of his cock, standing to attention.

“I want to come with your dick in my ass,” he said crudely before going to the bag he had put on the side and retrieving the tube of lube that he kept there. “Now would you please get naked already?”

Evan smirked at the breathiness of Cole’s voice and cocked an eyebrow. “Well, since you said please.”

Wrong place, right time.

Carter O’Conner exemplifies the term wrong place, wrong time when he gets between a hitman and that hitman’s prey. Sure he’s the next to die, he steels himself, refusing to give the killer the satisfaction of seeing his fear, even though he’s shaking like a leaf on the inside.

Antony Rosetta can’t ignore the man’s interesting reaction. Accustomed to begging and pleading, he respects the male escort’s strength… and struggles to forget the man after he walks away. As the weeks pass, his fantasies propel him to search for Carter and see what makes the man tick.

Carter doesn’t want to head out on another assignment but, after weeks of denial, he’s nowhere closer to paying his tuition bill. Accepting the address from his handler, he winds up before the hitman, afraid he’ll face death after all. Instead, he confronts a passion too much for him to handle.

Can these two broken men become whole in each other’s arms?

The slider skidded open and a dark form emerged through the billowing curtains. A man stood in the opening, a handgun hanging from one hand.

The sounds of the city exploded, the open door letting it all rush in to him, the cold air cold. Not that he truly felt it.

Carter backed away more, until his ass met wall. He stood there trembling, knowing he’d traded one killer for another. The man walked over to what was left of Enzo, checked for a pulse, and then rose back to his feet. He lifted the gun and put three more shots into the body, each one making Carter jump with fear.

And then the killer turned back to Carter, his expression unreadable. A cold sliver of fear crossed him, but it soon faded. He wasn’t sure why… there was everything to fear.

The guy towered well over Carter, he could tell even from across the room. His body was thick, but in a way that suggested hard muscle hid under his clothes.

He was dark and dangerous.

His skin was deeply tanned, his hair and stubble black as the night he’d emerged from. His clothes were black as well, covering him from shoulder to feet. Even his hands were covered in dark gloves.

His eyes, they weren’t dark. They were the color of caramel and, when the light hit them, they shone with a brilliance that made Carter’s stomach twist in something besides fear. But the fear was too great for him to fully register the sensation in that moment. Later, when he was recollecting on this moment and trying to burn the man’s face into his brain, he’d think about those eyes and how beautiful they were. He saw a cold detachment there. Yet, when the killer stared at him, emotion swirled in the depths. Carter felt a kinship to this man somehow. He recognized the emotion. He saw it when he looked in the mirror.

Loneliness.

How much he craved to look into those eyes as the man slid deep into his body over and over again, forcing his own solitude away.

But he wouldn’t recall pondering all that until later. All he thought about in the here and now was the fact he was about to die. His heart thundered in his ears and he felt his knees wobbling under him, but he did everything in his power to hide his body’s responses.

The killer drew something from his pocket. A switchblade opened as his long legs ate up the floor. Carter sucked in a breath and watched the light shine along the knife, knowing it was about to plunge into his chest.

Or his neck, slicing open his throat. He’d feel the warm curtain of blood coating him any second. And then it would all be over. A pointless existence. Another tragic case where no one would miss the poor, dead whore.

The killer stopped when his body was millimeters from touching Carter. He lifted the knife and Carter steeled himself… only to watch as the man shoved the blade into the wall. He dug the blade in a few times… before extracting the bullet that had taken Enzo’s life.

He showed it to Carter, looking somewhat proud. Whether that was meant to scare him, Carter didn’t know. When the knife flicked closed, he startled. The killer shoved the bullet, and then the knife, into his pocket.

Carter looked down to the gun still held in the man’s other hand and saw his own cock—red, angry, and rock hard—lightly pressing against the man’s thigh. His strong thigh. The desire to rock his hips and enjoy the friction of the tight black denim encasing those thighs hit him out of nowhere. He hadn’t been able to get it up for his john, but there he was stone hard and ready for a killer.
What the fuck is wrong with me?

Chris was stunned. At least that’s what it looked like, as he just stared at Steven. “I just want to be close to you even when we’re apart.”

That was not what Steven wanted to hear. “Then why leave?” Oh stars, he didn’t want this, but he couldn’t stop it. Not now. “Why are you leaving? If you want to be close to me, stay with me!”

The tears finally fell, and Steven felt the shame of them sting deep. Still, he couldn’t hold back now that he was going. Chris had opened something, and Steven couldn’t figure out how to close it.

“Don’t leave me,” Steven begged. “I-I-I lo—” Chris kissed him hard, cutting him off. Steven cried as he clung to Chris. He didn’t want it to end like this. He’d planned to see Chris off at the hangar with a smile and a gentle parting kiss, not this rough, hungry claiming.

“Don’t say it,” Chris pleaded, parting from Steven and resting their foreheads together. “I’m sorry, Steven. My selfishness is hurting you, so please don’t say it. I don’t deserve those words.”

Steven cried harder as he collapsed against Chris’s chest, his fists bunched in his shirt. “I hate you,” he said, but it was a lie. “I hate you. I hate you!”

Chris wrapped his strong arms around Steven, and Steven could almost swear he felt tears fall on his head, but he ignored them. This hurt, and it wasn’t fair. Why couldn’t this work for them?

“You have me, even if I’m not here,” Chris whispered before lifting Steven’s face and kissing him again.

Whimpering, Steven tried to pull Chris closer, but he seemed intent on keeping this kiss shallow. Steven knew it—this was it. Chris was saying good-bye. When they parted here, he would leave and Steven could do nothing to stop him.

Slowly, Chris stepped back, and Steven wanted to scream at the love he saw shining back at him in those steely eyes. “Thanks for the memories, kitten.”

The second the door closed behind Chris, Steven fell to the floor, sobbing. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d cried like this. Probably when his father beat him for the first time. No, this hurt worse. It was as if his heart were being ripped from his chest.

Love or Sacrifice: Sneak Peek Final Battle

“Move!” Nevada shouted releasing the spell and rushing forward. “Fire, gather and encircle my blades,” he called, collecting fire around the short swords he pulled from the sheaths at his sides.

He cut down the first man he saw, removing his head from his shoulders easily, cauterizing the wound instantly. The second man was also easily dispatched, Nevada driving his sword through the man’s heart.

By the third person the Blood of Aeon mages had recovered and were fighting back. Nevada had his hands full quickly fending off two skilled fighters as they used teamwork to press him.

“Runa and Eirik are running,” he heard someone shout above the battle.

“Fuck,” Nevada kicked out at his opponent before pulling out his family pendant. The steel rooster shimmered in the false light provided by the battery powered lamps placed throughout the cavern. The brown obsidian crystal clutched in the fowl’s talons glinted with golds and reds.

“Ancestors, lend me strength,” Nevada prayed as he slid the ring into place on his right middle finger. “Spirits of earth, heed my call! I call rocks to wake and clay to form. Appear and awake guardian!”
